Abstract: Selecting the best condition-monitoring technique for any particular case is not necessarily a simple matter. Technical considerations may well be relatively straightforward, as it is often reasonably easy to determine the particular monitoring technique appropriate to the problem in hand. What is however much more difficult is to select the technique which offers the most cost effective approach. This is the pipeline operator's dilemma - how to get the best value for money. This paper briefly reviews some of the factors which will influence the decisions from the pipeline operator's point of view.
