Abstract: Value for money is of course important to us all in our various endeavours, but when one becomes aware of the potentially-high costs involved in the monitoring of a long-distance pipeline (and consequently the large sums of money which might well be wasted if the wrong choices are made) it is clearly of paramount importance that the right decisions are taken. This paper briefly reviews some of the factors which will influence the decisions from the pipeline operator's point of view.
