Abstract: A new system for the protection of pipes stored outside for use in subsea pipeline construction was developed by Roplast and successfully installed on the NordStream Baltic Sea pipeline construction project. Novel pipe end caps consisting of a combination of high-performance elastomers with sensors, communication, and software technology make up a protection system that simultaneously provides protection against possible contamination of pipes during storage, reduction of corrosion of uncoated sections of pipes, warning of potential third-party damage due to construction, maintenance work or even wilfully, and complete pipe tracking throughout the logistics’ process.

A central control system collects and provides real-time data transmitted via self-assembling wireless networks as well as complete documentation and data evaluation. This paper describes the system and its performance in the field.
