Abstract: The paper discusses current possibilities and drawbacks of in-line inspection (ILI) in sizing defects in oil and gas pipelines. A methodology based on analysis of variances (ANOVA) is presented that extracts maximum possible information from the ILI measurements of defects and subsequent verification results. This full statistical analysis (FSA) methodology was extensively tested by using the Monte Carlo simulation method. It was then applied to analyze the content of sections 7, 9 and appendix E of the API 1163 RP Standard [1]. Case studies are also presented and discussed which demonstrate the application of the described method to the results of ILI and verification measurements on pipelines that are located on three continents.
