Title: Developments in the Australian pipeline industry

Abstract: Australia's vast spaces and isolated cities slowed the early development of pipeline infrastructure. Australia has a geographical structure with the major population centres around the coastline and the major sources of natural gas in remote inland areas and remote offshore areas. This has led to development of a monopolistic pipeline infrastructure with a single supply source serving a single gas utility in areas of high population density. As a result, pipeline infrastructure for oil and gas in Australia is relatively undeveloped compared with the United States and Europe, with few opportunities for alternative gas supplies to the one market.
