Abstract: Electron-beam welding (EBW) has been considered to be an attractive welding method for installing gas pipelines, since it can produce deep-penetration welds with high quality at high speed. However, conventional EBW is executed in the horizontal or flat position in a vacuum chamber, while the girth welding of pipelines must be done on site. Therefore, an all-position EBW process, and a new welding system for laying fixed pipes, had to be developed. This paper describes an all-position EBW process and a practical welding machine for laying natural gas pipelines. A newly-designed EBW system for joining pipes on site is introduced. The developed process for all-position girth welding has been performed from the inside of pipes using a mobile electron gun. The material of pipe was API 5L-X65, normally used for pipelines. EBW conditions such as accelerating voltage, beam current, focus position, and welding speed, were optimized using the newly-developed system. The weld quality and the mechanical properties of the girth welds obtained using the system were also investigated.
