Abstract: This project, funded by the DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, is part of a competitive effort to develop sensor technology to be integrated into the DOE’s successful Explorer robot. The Explorer II, the second generation of the Explorer vehicle, is under development by Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute. The chosen technology will be integrated into the Explorer and used in field trials at a member company of the Northeast Gas Association.

The system operates untethered in gas mains over distances up to 5 miles from the launch point. Both 6” and 8” pipelines are inspectable from the same platform. Wireless communication is maintained with the Explorer for control and data download.
