Title: Development of an inspection system for cast iron
Category: Pipeline Industries Guild technical library
Downloadable: Yes
Catalog No.: PIG0028
Date of Publication: January 1994
Price: $25.00 US
Authors:
Abstract: This paper describes the development of a pipe wall inspection system for cast iron. Early in 1991 British Gas Engineering Research Station (ERS) produced a magnetic flux leakage pig for the inspection of 150 mm (6 inch) diameter Ductile Iron Mains. This pig has been field trialled by British Gas North Western on nine sites to date.

The paper outlines the mechanical design of the DIMP (Ductile Iron Magnetic Pig) and examines the performance achieved during field trials. Larger sizes of DIMP have been produced, and developments will enable materials such as spun cast iron, pit cast iron and steel to be inspected using this basic system.
