Abstract: Tokyo Gas Co Ltd has an approximately 43,000-km long transmission and distribution network, consisting of various types of pipe. Of these, the total length of high-pressure trunk line is approximately 400km.

Unfortunately, there are mitre bends with a radius of 1.0D (90 , 45 and 22.5 ) in sections of the pipelines which were constructed in early 1960s, and inspection pigs in current use throughout the world are unable to pass through fittings such as these. To solve this problem, Tokyo Gas and NKK have co-operatively developed an inspection pig capable of passing through these mitre bends to check for wear and other problems caused by corrosion.
