Abstract: This paper shows the feasibility of using the MFL technique in an ILI tool to detect both the geometric deformation and cold working due to mechanical damage, and begins to quantify its potential as a method of characterizing these defects. Magnetic-flux leakage (MFL) is the most commonly used ILI technique in examining natural gas pipelines for corrosion. However, information on the sensitivity and characterization accuracy of the MFL technique of mechanical damage is mostly anecdotal. In fact, information on mechanical damage defects may exist in current MFL records, but be unrecognizable due to lack of understanding of MFL and these defects.
