Abstract: The properties and use of high-strength steel linepipe in grade X100 have been investigated in a comprehensive Joint Indusrty Programme by BG Technology, BP Amoco, and Shell Global Solutions International bv. The primary area of aplication of these materials is in long-distance, onshore, high-pressure pipelines for the transmission of dry, sweet, natural gas and rich dense-phase gas. The studies show that ultra-high-strength steels can offer considerable saving in capital expenditure and associated lifecycle costs. The technical challenges to be met in the engineering and construction of such pipelines are discussed in this paper.
