Abstract: The expanded use of in-line inspection technologies capable of providing three-dimensional profiles of pipeline dents has provided a new means of characterizing the significance of dents in pipelines. Industry sponsored studies have demonstrated that dent depth alone is not an adequate measure of the criticality of a dent. There are characteristics of a dent’s shape that can be captured from field excavations and in-line inspection tool information, which can then be used to determine why one dent may fail sooner than another. This information can be successfully incorporated into a pipeline integrity management system to guide excavation and repair programs to ensure a high level of safety while efficiently managing costs.
