Abstract: Design, integrity and safety of submarine pipelines in harsh ice environments pose a significant engineering challenge for oil and gas development in Arctic seas. Safety and environmental issues are of high concern in Arctic regions, and engineering codes and regulatory agency requirements need to be satisfied. Ice gouging and ice keel/pipeline contact is one of the main concerns in waters manifested with iceberg and other ice-gouging features. In recent years there has been exploration and development in some frontier regions with moderate ice-gouging climates, such as Sakhalin Island and the Alaskan North Slope. However, the development of marine pipelines in medium- and severe-gouging climates still faces significant technical challenges.
