Abstract: The design, construction, and operation of pipelines for marginal fields does not pose any difficulties from the standpoint of corrosion engineering and materials selection. This statement would in fact be correct if cost were not to be taken into account. The very fact that these fields are marginal means that a highly-critical review of these costs needs to be undertaken at an early stage in their possible development. It is for this reason that the corrosion engineering aspects of materials selection for marginal field use becomes so fascinating. This paper examines these necessarily imposed difficulties for the engineer involved in corrosion control and materials selection, and address the solution from a practical standpoint.
