Abstract: Pipeline pigs were originally used simply to maintain a flow through the pipeline. Modern pipelines have become critical components of the infrastructure of most countries, and represent huge investments in both initial capital, and subsequent operational and maintenance costs.

Pigs perform a vital role at all stages in the life of a pipeline; particularly in maintaining its efficiency and integrity. The selection of the optimum type of pig for any given set of circumstances is critical, but with over 300 types on the market, the buyer is faced with a difficult choice.

This paper discusses the aspects which must be taken into consideration when selecting pigs, reviews the types available, and provides guidance for the establishment of pig procedures.
