Abstract: Fleet Technology Ltd has developed a defect-assessment model combining finite-element analysis and a fracture mechanics’-based fatigue crack growth algorithm to characterize the impact of a dent on the integrity of a pipeline system. After extensive validation of the model using published fullscale test results and comparisons with actual in-service failures, the model is now being used to estimate the remaining life of dented pipe joints. This tool, and the knowledge acquired during its development, has been incorporated into several applications aimed at prioritizing dents to maximize the benefits of excavation and repair programs. This paper reviews the parameters involved in the development of the dent-assessment model, and discusses its practical application in the field of pipeline integrity management.
