Abstract: Engineers have hailed fibre reinforced composite materials as a solution that could change the face of industry since the 1970's. 30 years on the potential of these materials is beginning to be fulfilled. Their use in many applications within the energy sector, particularly offshore oil and gas, and the civil engineering industry is becoming increasingly common. This paper gives a brief review of their growing acceptance and then focuses on their use for repair of metal structures, particularly pipelines. The current initiatives to standardize design and validation of composite repairs to pipelines and pipework is presented alongside case studies to illustrate what this makes possible.

Composite materials can now be used to repair long sections of pipelines with confidence, providing the repairs are design and installed in line with industry best practice.
