Abstract: The ability to enter and exit a pipeline from the same single point offers many potential operational benefits to the pipeline operator. Add to this the ability to keep a pipeline in full production whilst this operation is carried out, hence avoiding deferred production, and the commercial benefits become obvious. The ‘Contraflow Tetherless Mechanical Pipeline Crawler’ developed by Weatherford offers such a capability. The tool, which has been under development for almost 5 years, has been successfully demonstrated under test conditions designed to be representative of actual field operations. This paper presents details of the Crawler tool, the development work carried out to-date, its capabilities and future potential applications of the technology.
