Abstract: Each year in the USA, a few hundred miles of pipelines that are built to carry numerous products are cleaned and dried to specified drying requirements prior to commissioning. The basic requirements for preparing an ethylene pipeline for commissioning after hydrotest are dewater, clean and dry to a -70oF dew point and inert with nitrogen. These are among the more stringent precommissioning requirements for pipelines. However, almost all pipelines, usually to a lesser degree, have some precommissioning requirements; even if it is only to run one pig to dewater the line. A pipeline that has been cleaned to remove all loosely adherent mill scale and construction debris and dried to the product specification can be commissioned and operated without encountering the usual problems caused by internal debris.
