Abstract: In 2002 the government of the Russian Federation reviewed and approved the major proposals of the Energy Strategy of Russia up to 2020 [1]. This strategy sets annual gas production targets of 231.2 x 1011cuft (6.55 x1011cum) by 2010, and 247.1 x 1011cuft (7.0 x 1011cum) by 2020. At present, the major source of natural gas are the fields of West Siberia. They are, however, already significantly depleted and, to meet the proposed targets by 2020, more than 76% of Russias natural gas production will have to come from new fields.
