Title: Cathodic protection of steel in concrete saturated with sea water

Abstract: The cathodic protection potential needed to prevent corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete saturated with sea water is unclear in the circumstances likely to occur in deep waters, where high chloride penetration will be combined with high alkalinity. The effects of fifty-day experiments at three potentials on the steel-concrete system are reported in this case history. The "normally" accepted levels of protection are seen to lead to pitting attack. The permeability of the concrete controls both current requirement to maintain the potential and the degree of corrosion attack.
