Abstract: A pipeline owner operates a network of large diameter pipelines in the production and transportation of natural gas. Within this infrastructure near a compressor station is a 48┬Činch pipeline made from API X70 pipe with 1.125-inch wall. The system successfully completed the hydrostatic test and was in service delivering natural gas at 940 psi. Inspection revealed that during construction a 0.433-inch mismatch at a girth weld had occurred. The pipeline owner analyzed the weld area and determined the conditions to be safe for the 940 psi operating pressure.
