Title: Cable operated ultrasonic pigs for pipeline and riser inspection

Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the possibilities of ultrasonic pigging of pipelines and risers. Cable-operated ultrasonic systems for distances up to 6000m, propelled either by reversible wheel-driven crawlers or by differential pressure, are described. These systems are suitable for pipes with diameters between 150 and 1400mm. Construction of tools suitable for even smaller diameters seems feasible.

A novel approach for the inspection of gas risers is also mentioned, in which full-circumferential coverage is achieved by means of a swivelling probe head. In this approach, the pipe will be flooded with a liquid. The first field application of this system is scheduled for autumn, 1992. A self-contained liquid-propelled ultrasonic intelligent pig for the inspection of riser pipes is also described.
