Abstract: The calculated failure pressures of gas pipelines vary considerably from test results. This variation stems from inaccuracies in the measured yield strength, and from inadequacies in the equations used to predict the burst pressure and failure strain. Plastic instability was described mathematically by Considère over 100 years ago. Using an extension of this concept, and an understanding of the variability of material properties in pipelines, a method of predicting failure in defect-free pipes is discussed. As a chain is as strong as its weakest link, in a pipe the weakest material reaches plastic instability first and dictates the failure position.
