Abstract: Baseline intelligent pigging, (or baseline inspection, or fingerprint inspection) has always been a debatable issue to a number of pipeline operators around the world; is it cost-effective? or is it really necessary to do an intelligent pigging inspection on a brand-new pipeline system? Petronas Gas Berhad (PGB) in 3rd quarter, 1994, completed its baseline inspection programme on 12 pipeline sections, with the length of each section varying from 3 to 154km, and pipeline diameter varying from 18in up to 36in. The PGB pipeline is a single line system traversing a number of on-going development areas. The inspection had saved us a potential line rupture which could have led to casualties and fatalities. There were experiences gained and lessons learned. As required by ISO 9002 for Continuous Improvement, this exercise enable us to refine and improve our long-term pipeline-integrity programme.
