Abstract: In this paper, the challenges of detecting and characterizing axially oriented cracks are explored. Sufficient conditions for creating a magnetizer for detecting this type of crack are discussed, with guidelines presented. Finally, we propose a direct methodology to estimate the crack parameters only from the measured y component of the magnetic leakage field in accordance with the available experimental set-up. Our methods use only the y-component not only for orientation but also for length and depth estimation. For this paper, we limit our attention to depth only. Thus, our method implies much simpler measurement apparatus.
