Abstract: Pigging technology has become a common solution for inspection and cleaning of pipelines in the oil and gas business. Pipes in various diameters, ranging in size from small to man-entry, pipes up to several hundred kilometres in length, and pipes with different types of valves, fittings, etc., are all being pigged both traditionally' and intelligently' with great success. Within other businesses, operating considerable amounts of pipeline, this technology is hardly known, or in very limited use. Some of these businesses are beset by the problems of advancing age, leading to increasing maintenance requirements and very high running costs for their pipelines. The need for advanced technology and cost-effective solutions is, therefore, huge.
