Abstract: The technology of pipelayinq in deep water is at a stage of extremely rapid progress. With this advancing technology goes a need for yet more thorough and carefulengineering. The consequences of failure and delay become extremely expensive, and, on the other hand, engineering analysis which serves to increase the effectiveness of equipment can have a very high economic return .

Most submarine pipelines are built by the laybarge method. The pipe i s welded together, length by length, on a moored barge. As the barge moves forward, the pipe leaves the barge stern, and is lowered to the bottom in a long gentle s-curve. A laybarge pipelaying system is extremely complex, and almost every detail raises interesting and rewarding questions in engineering. Some of these questions are examined.

Also, some alternatives to the laybarge are examined.
