Abstract: As I intend to show, the most efficient, reliable, and accurate pig-location techniques involve an active transmitter located in the pig emitting a signal to a receiver located on the outside of the pipeline. To accomplish signal transmission such as this, one usually thinks of radio frequencies (RF) being the solution. The steel pipe that is used for modern pipelines, however, provides a near-perfect shield of RF signals. When radio frequencies are ruled out as a transmission source, one is left with a handful of technologies that can be used with varying degrees of success. I will discuss in detail the pros and cons of each of these technologies, as well as CDI's resultant line of products.
