Abstract: Water service companies in the U.K. are currently involved in a large scale capital investment programme. This is aimed at upgrading their infrastructure assets to achieve levels of service relating to flooding and combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges. A significant proportion of the investment required to do this will be aimed at minimising the impact of CSO discharges on watercourses both in terms of pollutant load and aesthetic pollution.

The area of aesthetic pollution alone presents a difficult challenge to the water industry. The challenge is twofold, firstly to the water service companies in planning the engineering aspects of upgrading their assets to meet these levels of service and secondly to the industry as a whole in reacting to the demand to develop effective, efficient screening methods which will allow compliance to be achieved.
