Title: A submarine pipeline topography monitoring system

Abstract: The effects of pipeline curvature in the vertical plane arising from an uneven foundation are discussed. In particular, bending stresses and the possibility of upheaval buckling are considered. Economic remedial action, i.e. dredging or rock dumping, depends on detailed information about the distribution of requirements along the pipeline route, which must be derived from dimensional survey data. A computer routine is described which meets these objectives, generating detailed estimates of rock dumping requirements and local stresses. Local regions can be examined in detail, and the effects of possible modification to the seabed profile explored.

The problem of locating and quantifying the effects of curvatures in the vertical plane, which are potentially much more damaging, is the basis of the present paper.
