Abstract: BASED ON ECONOMICAL, data quality, bandwidth, and centralized health monitoring considerations, a self- powering and geo-tagging approach is devised that would enable high-quality inspection data to be recorded continuously during long-distance pipeline inspections without having to modify or use existing pipeline infrastructures as a communication medium for data transfer. The proposed self- powering mechanism, based on the dynamo principle, not only supplies an intelligent pigs with power during pipeline inspections, but simultaneously allows geo-location of the intelligent tool with high accuracy and redundancy in environments devoid of GPS support, using odometry. The thus-obtained geo-tagged pipeline-inspection data can be viewed and analysed offline in a centralized health-monitoring facility for increased efficiency.
