Abstract: Pipeline integrity management is undertaken world-wide using reliability or risk analyses in a continuous effort to improve the tools for addressing integrity and environmental concerns associated with aging pipelines. This work presents a study in which the data collected using high-resolution in-line-inspection tools are combined with fitness-for-purpose probabilistic assessment in order to evaluate the present and future integrity of in-service corroded pipelines. A structural reliability analysis framework is developed which is capable of evaluating the condition of a corroding pipeline and the evolution of its probability of failure with service. The uncertainties associated with the inspection tool, corrosion growth rate, pipeline geometry, material strength, and operating pressure are modeled and used to determine the probability of failure of the pipeline. The results of this evaluation are compared with target reliability levels derived by risk analysis in order to produce decision models for re-inspection, corrosion control, re-rating, and repairing. The proposed methodology allows strategies to be proposed to ensure the current and future safe operation of the pipeline based on minimizing the cost of remediation while maintaining, at least, the projected operational and safety goals.
