Abstract: |
Part of British Gas is concerned with maintaining and improving the safety of its extensive gas distribution system. A
research programme was established in 1976 to understand how high stresses occur in mains and how they can be minimised.
This paper reviews the potential causes of high stresses in
mains. Stresses can arise from many causes such as the effects of ground moisture and temperature changes, nearby
deep excavations and tunnels, surface loading, impact, soil properties, bedding and backfill. |
