Abstract: Sulphate-reducing bacteria are a group of anaerobic organisms that utilize sulphate instead of atmospheric oxygen as electron acceptor in the oxidation of organic substances. The sulphide so produced reacts with metallic iron or with ferrous ions to produce various iron sulphides, which either occur as adherent, temporarily-protective films on the metal surface or as loose, bulky products. Biogenic and chemically-produced iron sulphides have been shown to be extremely corrosive to ferrous metals. These facts are discussed and the latest results presented. The extra current requirements for effective cathodic protection in the presence of ferrous metals or iron sulphides is presented and discussed.
