Abstract: Nowsco uses the GEOPIG data to determine, in many applications, the pipeline bending strains. This paper addresses how the data is utilized to compute those strains. The paper begins with a brief description of the GEOPIG data-acquisition system, and this is followed by a description of the basic processing steps for all GEOPIG applications. The paper then describes the definition of horizontal, vertical, and total pipeline curvature, followed by the determination of curvature from differential attitude data (coarse curvature determination). The least-squares' determination of centerline fit and resultant curvature using cubic splines follow (fine curvature determination). Finally, the calculation of bending strain based on the curvature data is outlined. Several examples of pipeline data acquired by the GEOPIG in operating oil and gas pipelines around the world are given to show the quality of the data obtained and the interpretation that is required.
